Located only about 30 kilometres south of Phnom Penh, I have started a small tropical forages planting to experiment with the production of high quality forages to sell into the huge demand for cattle feed in this part of Cambodia. At this stage the two species of choice are stylosanthes guianenis cv. Ubon stylo and panicum maximum cv. Mombassa guinea.
The cattle feed market and growing high quality forages for animal fattening is a sleeping giant in Cambodia. Cattle prices are up in the region and most Cambodian farmers keep cattle. Yet there main feed is rice straw! While there have been many good programs to introduce tropical forages in Cambodia, most people are unaware of their benefits. I hope to change that in this small community.
